Grime Rapper Stormzy’s debut album ‘Gang Signs and Prayer’ becomes number one on the Official Albums Chart and in the process makes history.
The 23 year old self-proclaimed ‘wicked skeng man’ released his first album this year on the 24th of February and already became popular in the first week of its release. Stormzy has been independent since the start of his career and began his own record label ‘#Merky Records’ however this number one title was a group effort. The grime artist took to Instagram to ask his fans to help him achieve this milestone, the post started with “Yo my gs, today is the last day to make sure we get the number 1 album” and they delivered.

After the success of having a number one album the rapper reacted by saying “It hasn’t sunk in yet. Honestly, I wish I could take every person who bought and streamed the album out with me, have dinner with them, dedicate a whole night to them. I don’t take your support for granted. I can’t thank you enough.”
Stormzy also managed to gain the most first-week streams for an album, beating Justin Bieber who was the last artist to hit that record with his album ‘Purpose’. The rapper has also proven himself as a grime artist king by outperforming his grime counterparts such as Giggs and Skepta. He even outsold UK rap veteran Dizzee Rascal’s 2003 album ‘Boy In Da Corner’. Stormzy’s success has helped to put grime on the map and crossover internationally as his album features popular US artist Kehlani.
Congratulations to Stormzy on all his success, we hope he continues to achieve higher in the future.
